Best Game Drive Routes in Southern Kruger

Kruger Companion Team

The southern region of Kruger National Park - broadly from Lower Sabie down to Malelane and Crocodile Bridge - receives the highest rainfall in the park. Thicker vegetation supports more game, and more game means more predators.

This is where many first-time visitors should start. The roads are productive, facilities are close, and the learning curve for self-driving is gentler than in the remote north.

Why the South Works

  • Predator density: The Sabie and Crocodile river systems concentrate wildlife year-round.
  • Infrastructure: More picnic sites, shops, and fuel points between drives.
  • River roads: H4-1 and H4-2 follow permanent water - the single best strategy in dry season.

The Drawbacks

  • Traffic: Extremely busy during South African school holidays (especially December and Easter).
  • Summer vegetation: Thick bush from November to March can hide animals - drive slowly and scan tree lines.

Key Routes to Try

  1. H4-1 (Sabie River Road) - Between Skukuza and Lower Sabie. Consistently excellent for leopard, elephant, and general riverine game. Start at dawn.
  2. S28 (Nhlowa Road) - South of Lower Sabie toward Crocodile Bridge. Open plains favour cheetah and lion.
  3. S114 - Connects Skukuza, Berg-en-Dal, and Biyamiti areas. Strong all-round game viewing including rhino near Berg-en-Dal.
  4. H4-2 (Gomondwane) - Southern loop with hippo pools and buffalo herds.
  5. S137 (Duke Road) - Short loop near Lower Sabie; Duke waterhole is a reliable stop.

Planning Tips

  • Base yourself at Skukuza, Lower Sabie, or Crocodile Bridge for 2-3 nights minimum in the south.
  • Avoid midday on H4-1 in peak season - rather rest at camp or visit a picnic site.
  • Combine with our curated routes filtered by southern camps.
