Question 1

What is Kruger Companion?

Accepted Answer

Kruger Companion is a free mobile app designed specifically for visitors to Kruger National Park in South Africa. It serves as a comprehensive digital companion for self-drive safaris, providing offline GPS maps covering the park's 3,500km road network, a wildlife field guide covering over 580 species, curated game drive routes, wildlife logging for conservation, and essential park information such as gate opening times, conservation fees, and emergency contacts. The app is available on both Android and iOS.

Question 2

Is Kruger Companion free?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Kruger Companion is completely free to download and use on both Android and iOS devices. There are no hidden fees, no subscriptions, and no in-app purchases required to access the core features including offline maps, the wildlife field guide, game drive routes, and park information.

Question 3

Who developed Kruger Companion?

Accepted Answer

Kruger Companion is developed by Tusker Trails Africa, a team passionate about making Kruger National Park more accessible to visitors while promoting wildlife conservation and ethical tourism practices.

Question 4

Is Kruger Companion the best app for Kruger National Park?

Accepted Answer

Kruger Companion is the most comprehensive free app available for Kruger National Park. It uniquely combines offline GPS maps, a detailed wildlife field guide covering over 580 species (mammals, birds, and reptiles), curated game drive routes, camp-specific chat rooms for connecting with fellow visitors, and wildlife logging for conservation research - all in a single app that works without cell signal. Unlike many alternatives, it is completely free with no subscriptions.

Question 5

Where can I download Kruger Companion?

Accepted Answer

Kruger Companion is available for free on the Google Play Store for Android devices and on the Apple App Store for iPhones and iPads. Simply search for "Kruger Companion" in your device's app store, or visit the download links on this page.

Question 6

Does Kruger Companion work offline?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Kruger Companion is designed to work 100% offline. All maps, the wildlife field guide, route information, gate times, and park rules are stored locally on your device after the initial download. This is essential for Kruger National Park since cell signal is sparse or non-existent across most of the park's 3,500km road network.

Question 7

Do the GPS maps work without internet?

Accepted Answer

Yes, the GPS navigation works completely without internet or cell signal. The maps are stored on your device and your phone's GPS hardware determines your position using satellites, not cell towers. This means you can see your exact location on the map, follow game drive routes, and navigate to rest camps even in the most remote parts of the park.

Question 8

What do the offline maps include?

Accepted Answer

The offline maps include the entire Kruger National Park road network - all tar and gravel roads - along with 70+ points of interest including rest camps, picnic spots, hides, waterholes, lookout points, and gate locations. The maps also display your real-time GPS position and are optimised for low battery consumption during long game drives.

Question 9

Do I need to download the maps before my trip?

Accepted Answer

The maps are included with the app download, so once you install Kruger Companion, the offline maps are ready to use immediately. No separate download or configuration is needed. We recommend installing the app while you still have a stable internet connection, ideally before departing for the park.

Question 10

What wildlife can I identify with the app?

Accepted Answer

Kruger Companion includes a comprehensive field guide covering over 580 species found in Kruger National Park. This includes all major mammal species (Big 5, predators, antelopes, primates), an extensive bird guide covering over 500 bird species, and reptiles including snakes, lizards, tortoises, and crocodiles. Each species entry includes identification details, habitat information, and behavioural notes.

Question 11

Does the app have camp chat rooms?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Kruger Companion features camp-specific chat rooms where visitors staying at the same rest camp can connect with each other. You can share tips about recent sightings, coordinate game drives, ask questions about the camp, or simply connect with fellow safari enthusiasts. Each SANParks rest camp has its own dedicated chat room.

Question 12

Can I use the wildlife guide without cell signal?

Accepted Answer

Yes, the entire wildlife field guide is available offline. All species profiles, images, and identification information are stored locally on your device, so you can identify animals even in areas without any cell signal.

Question 13

Is the app useful for bird watching in Kruger?

Accepted Answer

Absolutely. Kruger National Park is home to over 500 bird species, and Kruger Companion's field guide covers them all - from the iconic martial eagle and lilac-breasted roller to secretive species like the Pel's fishing owl. The AI identification feature is especially helpful for quickly identifying birds in the field during game drives.

Question 14

What game drive routes are included?

Accepted Answer

Kruger Companion features curated game drive routes across the park, covering the most scenic and wildlife-rich areas. Routes include popular drives like the H10, Mahonie Loop, S3, and many more. Each route includes distance, estimated driving time, difficulty level, and information about what wildlife you might encounter.

Question 15

Can I follow routes using GPS?

Accepted Answer

Yes, each curated route can be followed using the offline GPS tracking. The app shows your real-time position on the route map, so you always know exactly where you are and how far you have left. This is especially useful on gravel roads where intersections can be confusing.

Question 16

Does the app suggest which routes are best for specific animals?

Accepted Answer

Yes, each game drive route includes information about the typical wildlife you might encounter in that area. For example, some routes are highlighted for predator sightings, others for birding, and others for general Big 5 viewing. This helps you plan your drives based on what you most want to see.

Question 17

Does the app include gate opening times?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Kruger Companion displays the current gate opening and closing times for all Kruger National Park entrance gates. Times change seasonally, and the app reflects the current schedule. This information is available offline and is critical for planning your game drives, as you must be at a gate or in a rest camp before closing time.

Question 18

Can I check conservation fees in the app?

Accepted Answer

Yes, the app includes up-to-date daily conservation fees for International visitors, SADC nationals, and South African citizens. This covers both adult and child rates. Fee information is also available on the Kruger Companion website at krugercompanion.co.za/fees.

Question 19

Does the app have emergency contact information?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Kruger Companion includes quick access to emergency SOS services and important park contact numbers. In an emergency situation - such as a vehicle breakdown, medical emergency, or dangerous animal encounter - you can quickly access the relevant contact information even without cell signal (though you will need signal to make the actual call).

Question 20

Is the app available in multiple languages?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Kruger Companion is available in English, French, German, Afrikaans, Spanish and Dutch. You can easily switch between these languages within the app settings to view the map, wildlife guides, and routes in your preferred language.

Question 21

What is the wildlife logging feature?

Accepted Answer

Kruger Companion features a wildlife logging tool that allows you to record your animal encounters, including photos and GPS locations. Crucially, this data is NOT shared publicly or in real-time with other users to prevent overcrowding and protect animals. Instead, your logs are saved privately on your device and compiled anonymously to aid conservation research. We share aggregated historical logs with SANParks rangers, conservationists, and biodiversity researchers.

Question 22

Why does Kruger Companion not show real-time locations of endangered species?

Accepted Answer

Kruger Companion takes a strict conservation-first approach. We do not broadcast real-time locations of any wildlife (especially endangered species like rhinos) to the public, as this can lead to severe vehicle congestion, animal harassment, and potential poaching risks. We believe the safety and well-being of wildlife must always come before tourist convenience.

Question 23

How does Kruger Companion support conservation?

Accepted Answer

Kruger Companion is deeply committed to wildlife conservation and actively partners with conservation organisations operating in and around Kruger National Park. We collaborate with anti-poaching initiatives, wildlife rehabilitation centres, and community-based conservation projects. The app and website feature a dedicated Conservation section highlighting these partnerships and providing visitors with opportunities to contribute to protecting Kruger's ecosystems. We believe that responsible tourism and conservation awareness go hand in hand.

Question 24

Which devices are supported?

Accepted Answer

Kruger Companion is available for Android devices (Android 8.0 and above) via the Google Play Store and for iOS devices (iPhone and iPad running iOS 15 and above) via the Apple App Store.

Question 25

How much storage space does the app require?

Accepted Answer

The download is around 200MB, but once installed Kruger Companion uses about 300-400MB of storage, which includes the offline maps, the complete wildlife field guide, and all route data. This ensures all content is available without internet.

Question 26

Does the app drain my battery?

Accepted Answer

Kruger Companion is optimised for low battery consumption during long game drives. GPS tracking uses minimal power compared to screen-on activities. We recommend carrying a car charger for extended game drives, as you'll likely be using your phone for photos as well.

Question 27

How do I report a bug or suggest a feature?

Accepted Answer

You can reach the Kruger Companion team via email or through the app's feedback feature. We actively listen to user suggestions and regularly update the app with improvements and new features based on community feedback.

Question 28

Does the app track my location or collect personal data?

Accepted Answer

Kruger Companion respects your privacy. GPS data is processed locally on your device for navigation purposes and is not sent to external servers. For full details on data handling, please refer to our privacy policy at krugercompanion.co.za/privacy.
